How to Calculate Distance, Round-Trip Mileage & Repeated Travel

Start with the distance between two locations, identify whether that value represents a road route or a straight-line measurement, and then apply the trip structure. For U.S. driving calculations, report the result primarily in miles (mi).

A “trip” must be defined consistently. If one entry means a round trip, do not multiply by two again after the round-trip mileage has already been calculated.

Equivalent to approximately mi = km × 0.621371.

Divide the meter value by 1,609.344 to express the same distance in miles.

The distance has not changed—only its numerical representation has.

How straight-line distance differs from a simple mileage formula

When locations are map points

A mapping tool can determine direct separation from the locations or their geographic coordinates. Because positions on Earth are geographic rather than points on a flat sheet, the tool should use an appropriate geographic-distance method rather than multiplying road mileage by a fixed factor.

The word mileage does not by itself identify whether the value is one way, round trip, route-based, or repeated travel. That context should be stated with the result.

Is driving distance the same as straight-line distance?

No. Driving distance follows a selected road route. Straight-line distance measures direct geographic separation between two points without following roads.

A road can curve, cross a bridge, avoid restricted terrain, or follow an indirect network. For that reason, there is no universal conversion factor from straight-line miles to driving miles.
