Why buy an advanced scientific calculator?

These models sit in a useful middle ground: much more capable than a basic scientific calculator, but smaller, simpler and usually less expensive than a graphing calculator.

1. Check the course rule

Some instructors require a particular calculator family or ban graphing models during exams.

2. Think about workflow

Menu-led calculators can feel cleaner, while traditional key layouts can be faster after practice.

3. Practice on the same model

Speed comes from knowing where functions live—not from owning the model with the longest specification sheet.

TI-36X Pro scientific calculator
01 · Engineering all-rounder

TI-36X Pro

A strong choice when you need serious math and science functions but graphing technology is not allowed.

SAT / ACT friendlyNCEES family4-line display

Texas Instruments built the TI-36X Pro around higher-level math and science. Its MultiView display can show multiple calculations at once, while MathPrint presents fractions, roots and symbols in textbook-style form. It also includes numeric equation, polynomial and linear-system solvers.

  • Numeric derivatives and definite integrals
  • Matrices and vectors
  • Complex-number arithmetic
  • One- and two-variable statistics
  • Physical constants and unit conversions
  • Solar assistance plus battery power
Casio fx-991CW ClassWiz scientific calculator
02 · Modern ClassWiz

Casio fx-991CW

A modern, menu-based scientific calculator with strong engineering and equation tools.

SAT / ACT friendlyNCEES familySolar + battery

The fx-991CW uses Casio’s newer ClassWiz interface with an icon menu, high-resolution natural-textbook display and persistent variables. Casio Education lists derivatives, integration, distribution calculations, equation solving up to four unknowns, complex numbers, 47 scientific constants and 40 measurement conversions.

  • High-resolution 4-gradation LCD
  • Complex numbers across apps and modes
  • Derivatives and numerical integration
  • Equation solving up to four unknowns
  • 47 constants and 40 conversions
  • QR-based visualization via ClassPad Math
Casio fx-115ES Plus 2nd Edition scientific calculator
03 · Traditional engineering layout

Casio fx-115ES Plus 2nd Edition

A proven non-graphing model with direct access to many engineering and higher-math functions.

SAT / ACT friendlyNCEES familyNatural textbook display

The fx-115ES Plus 2nd Edition keeps a more traditional scientific-calculator layout while offering matrices, vectors, complex numbers, numeric differentiation and integration, summation, scientific constants and simultaneous/polynomial equation solving.

  • Complex-number mode
  • Matrix and vector calculations
  • Derivatives, integrals and summation
  • Polynomial and simultaneous equations
  • 40 scientific constants and 40 conversions
  • Two-way solar + battery power
Sharp EL-W516TBSL scientific calculator
04 · Feature-dense alternative

Sharp EL-W516TBSL

A 4-line WriteView scientific calculator for advanced school, science and technical coursework.

Scientific-calculator class640 functionsTwin power

Sharp’s WriteView display is designed to show expressions in textbook-style form. The EL-W516TBSL is marketed with 640 functions for general math, algebra, geometry, precalculus, calculus, trigonometry, statistics, biology, chemistry and physics.

  • 4-line, 16-digit display
  • WriteView textbook-style entry and output
  • Advanced scientific and statistical functions
  • Suitable for calculus and trigonometry workflows
  • Solar with battery backup
  • Large function set for technical coursework
Engineering exam note: NCEES is stricter than SAT or ACT

For 2026 NCEES exams, the approved families include Casio models with “fx-115” or “fx-991” in the model name and Texas Instruments models with “TI-30X” or “TI-36X” in the model name. That places the TI-36X Pro, fx-991CW and fx-115ES Plus 2nd Edition inside the approved family naming rules. The Sharp model is not part of the NCEES whitelist. Always recheck NCEES before FE/PE exam day because the list is reviewed annually.

Quick comparison

All four are non-graphing scientific calculators, but their interfaces and advanced-function coverage differ.

SAT and ACT currently allow scientific calculators subject to their general restrictions. AP rules vary by subject: some exams permit or recommend scientific calculators, while AP Calculus requires a graphing calculator for specified portions. Always verify the current exam owner’s policy.

Simple buying advice

Which type of student benefits most?

Engineering student or FE/PE candidate?

The TI-36X Pro, fx-991CW and fx-115ES Plus 2nd Edition all fit the current NCEES family naming rules. Practice on one model long before exam day.

High-school algebra, physics or chemistry?

Any of these can be useful. The best choice is usually the model that matches the teacher’s examples and course rules.

Need calculus but not graphing?

TI-36X Pro and both Casio models provide numerical differentiation/integration. They do not replace a graphing calculator where an exam explicitly requires one.

Prefer menus or direct keys?

The fx-991CW leans into an icon/menu workflow. The TI-36X Pro and fx-115ES Plus 2 keep more functions close to the physical keypad.
