The time between a birth date and another date, usually shown in years, months and days.
Duration
How much time passes between a starting point and an ending point.
Distance
How far apart two places or points are.
Mileage
Distance measured in miles, often for a journey or total travel.
Percentage
A way of showing an amount out of 100, such as a 15% tip or 20% discount.
Conversion
Changing a value into another unit, currency or system while describing the same amount.
Exchange Rate
The rate used to compare and convert one currency with another. Rates can change over time.
Household Expense

Budget

Days or Time Between Two Dates

Duration = End Date − Start Date

Start Date = when the period begins.
End Date = when the period finishes.
Calendar calculations should use real calendar dates.

Round-Trip Distance

Round-Trip Distance = One-Way Distance × 2

One-Way Distance = distance from the starting place to the destination.
Use road distance if the question is about actual travel.

Total Mileage = Trip Distance × Number of Trips

Trip Distance = distance for one trip.

The discount is the amount removed. The final price is what remains to be paid.

Amount Per Person = Total Bill ÷ Number of People

Decide whether any tip or service charge is included before splitting.

Simple Months to a Savings Goal

Months Needed = Savings Goal ÷ Amount Saved Each Month

This is a simple plan. It does not include investment growth or interest unless a more advanced model is used.

Old Value = starting measurement.
Conversion Factor = relationship between the starting and target units.

Monthly Cost = Housing + Food + Utilities + Transport + Other Costs

Annual Cost = Monthly Cost × 12

Use this only when the monthly amount is a useful representation of the whole year.

Include the regular income amounts that belong in the budget and keep them on the same time basis.

Money Left = Total Income − Total Expenses

A positive result means money remains. A negative result means expenses are higher than income.

Savings

Savings Rate

Savings Rate = Savings ÷ Income × 100

Savings and Income should cover the same period, such as one month.

Comparison

Percentage Cost Difference

Percentage Difference = Cost Difference ÷ Starting Cost × 100

Clearly state which cost is being used as the starting or comparison value.

Changing prices

Inflation & Future Household Costs

Inflation calculations estimate how a cost could change if a stated rate is applied. They do not mean every household item will rise by exactly the same percentage.

One price change

New Cost After a Percentage Increase

New Cost = Old Cost × (1 + Inflation Percentage ÷ 100)

Old Cost = current amount.
Inflation Percentage = assumed price rise.

Several years

Future Cost with Repeated Growth

Future Cost = Starting Cost × (1 + r)n

r = yearly rate written as a decimal.
n = number of years.
Example: 5% becomes 0.05.

Add only the education costs that apply.

Monthly Cost = Annual Cost ÷ 12

This spreads a yearly total evenly across 12 months. Real payment dates may still differ.

Monthly Savings Needed = (Savings Goal − Money Already Saved) ÷ Months Remaining

This is a simple savings model and does not include investment growth unless a separate growth model is used.

Total Debt = Debt 1 + Debt 2 + Debt 3 + …

Add the outstanding balances you want included.

Total Monthly Debt Payments

Monthly Debt Payments = Payment 1 + Payment 2 + Payment 3 + …

This uses required monthly payments, not the full debt balances.

Debt ratio

Debt-to-Income Ratio

Debt-to-Income = Monthly Debt Payments ÷ Monthly Income × 100

State clearly which income figure is being used, such as gross or net monthly income.

How to Check the Maths Yourself

Use these short procedures when you want to verify a calculator result manually.

Dates & Age

  1. Formula: compare the start and end dates.
  2. Identify: birth/start date and reference/end date.
  3. Substitute: place the dates in chronological order.
  4. Calculate: count full years, then months and days, or total elapsed days.
  5. Interpret: say whether the answer is age, duration or total days.

Distance & Mileage

  1. Formula: choose one-way, round-trip or repeated-trip maths.
  2. Identify: distance and number of journeys.
  3. Substitute: put the values into the chosen rule.

Household Budget

  1. Formula: money left = income − expenses.
  2. Identify: all income and expense amounts for the same period.
  3. Substitute: total each side.
  4. Calculate: subtract expenses from income.
  5. Interpret: positive means money left; negative means a budget gap.

Inflation Estimate

  1. Formula: new cost = old cost × (1 + rate).
  2. Identify: current cost and assumed rate.
  3. Substitute: turn the percentage into a decimal where needed.
  4. Calculate: apply the increase once or repeatedly.
  5. Interpret: call it an estimate based on the assumed rate.

Education Savings

  1. Formula: remaining goal ÷ months remaining.
  2. Identify: target, money already saved and time left.
  3. Substitute: subtract existing savings from the goal.
  4. Calculate: divide the remaining amount by months left.
  5. Interpret: show the monthly amount needed under the simple plan.

Debt-to-Income

  1. Formula: monthly debt payments ÷ monthly income × 100.

Situations Where a Simple Formula Needs Extra Care

Months have different lengths

Do not treat every calendar month as exactly 30 days when calculating age or date duration.

Leap years

Date calculations should use the real calendar where February may contain 29 days.

Road vs straight-line distance

A direct map distance is not necessarily the distance actually travelled.

Tip vs service charge

Check whether a service charge is already included before adding another amount.

Currency fees

An exchange-rate conversion may not equal the final amount paid after card charges or other fees.

Irregular household bills

Annual or occasional expenses may need to be spread across the year for a monthly budget.

Different household sizes

Two households can have different spending needs even when they live in the same place.

Inflation varies by category

Food, housing, energy and childcare do not necessarily change at the same rate.

Debt interest matters

A simple debt total does not show the full future repayment cost when interest applies.

Find Someone’s Exact Age

A person’s date of birth is 14 March 2012. The reference date is 22 July 2024. How old are they?

Identify values Birth date = 14 March 2012
Reference date = 22 July 2024
Calculate 14 March 2012 → 14 March 2024 = 12 years
14 March → 14 July = 4 months
14 July → 22 July = 8 days
Result: 12 years, 4 months, 8 days

In completed years, the person is 12 years old. The longer result gives the more exact calendar age.

Example 2

Find Round-Trip Mileage

A destination is 20 miles away by road. How far is the full return journey?

Formula Round-Trip Distance = One-Way Distance × 2
Identify values One-way distance = 20 miles
Substitute & calculate 20 × 2 = 40 miles
Result: 40 miles

The complete journey is 20 miles out and 20 miles back.

Example 3

Find Mileage for Several Trips

One trip is 15 miles. The same trip is made four times. What is the total mileage?

Substitute Total Mileage = 15 × 4
Calculate 15 × 4 = 60
Result: 60 miles

Check whether “one trip” already includes a return journey before multiplying.

Example 4

Age and Total Days Answer Different Questions

A person may want their normal age for a form, but another task may ask for the total number of elapsed days since birth.

Normal age Usually reported as completed years or years, months and days.
Total days Counts the elapsed calendar days between two dates.
Result: choose the output that matches the question

“How old?” and “How many days have passed?” are related but different calculations.

Percentage calculations are common in shopping, dining and other everyday money decisions.

Example 5

Work Out a 10% Restaurant Tip

The bill is £40 and you want to add a 10% tip.

Formula Tip = Bill × Tip Percentage ÷ 100
Substitute Tip = £40 × 10 ÷ 100
Calculate Tip = £4
Final bill = £40 + £4 = £44
Result: £4 tip, £44 total

Check whether a service charge has already been included before adding another amount.

Example 6

Find the Price After a 25% Discount

An item costs £80 and is reduced by 25%.

Formula Discount = Original Price × Discount Percentage ÷ 100
Substitute Discount = £80 × 25 ÷ 100 = £20
Final price £80 − £20 = £60
Result: £60

The £20 is the discount. £60 is the amount left to pay.

Use an Example Currency Rate

Suppose an example exchange rate says one unit of Currency A equals 1.25 units of Currency B. What does 100 units become?

Substitute 100 × 1.25
Calculate 100 × 1.25 = 125
Result: 125 units of Currency B

This is an illustrative rate only. Real exchange rates change, and fees can affect the amount paid.

Example 8

Simple Savings Goal

You want to save £1,200 and can put aside £100 each month.

Formula Months Needed = Savings Goal ÷ Monthly Saving
Substitute £1,200 ÷ £100
Calculate 1,200 ÷ 100 = 12 months
Result: 12 months

This simple example assumes no interest, investment growth or missed monthly contributions.

These examples show why current costs, household budgets and inflation should be treated as connected but different calculations.

Example 9

Compare Two Household Cost Plans

Household Plan A costs £2,000 per month. Household Plan B costs £2,300 per month.

Monthly difference £2,300 − £2,000 = £300
Annual difference £300 × 12 = £3,600
Percentage difference from Plan A £300 ÷ £2,000 × 100 = 15%
Result: Plan B costs £300 more per month

That is £3,600 more per year, or 15% higher than the £2,000 starting cost.

Example 10

Find Money Left After Monthly Expenses

A household has £3,200 of monthly income and £2,800 of monthly expenses.

Formula Money Left = Income − Expenses
Substitute £3,200 − £2,800
Calculate £3,200 − £2,800 = £400
Result: £400 left this month

A positive result means income is higher than the expenses included in the budget.

Example 11

Understand a 12% Savings Rate

Monthly income is £3,200 and £384 is being saved. What percentage of income is being saved?

Formula Savings Rate = Savings ÷ Income × 100
Substitute £384 ÷ £3,200 × 100
Calculate 0.12 × 100 = 12%
Result: 12%

In plain language, about 12 out of every 100 units of income are being saved.

Example 12

Estimate a 5% Increase in a Household Cost

A household cost is £100 per month. Assume it rises by 5%.

Formula New Cost = Old Cost × (1 + Inflation Percentage ÷ 100)
Substitute £100 × (1 + 5 ÷ 100)
= £100 × 1.05
Calculate £100 × 1.05 = £105
Result: £105 per month

This is a simple estimate using a 5% assumed increase. Different household costs can change at different rates.

Longer-Term Family Money Examples

Example 13

Plan Monthly Saving for Education

A family wants £12,000 for future education costs. They already have £3,000 and have 36 months left.

Formula Monthly Savings Needed = (Goal − Already Saved) ÷ Months Remaining
Find the remaining goal £12,000 − £3,000 = £9,000
Calculate monthly saving £9,000 ÷ 36 = £250
Result: £250 per month

This is a simple savings plan. It does not include interest or investment growth.

Example 14

Calculate Debt-to-Income

Monthly debt payments are £500 and the chosen monthly income figure is £2,500.

Formula Debt-to-Income = Monthly Debt Payments ÷ Monthly Income × 100
Substitute £500 ÷ £2,500 × 100
Calculate 0.20 × 100 = 20%
Result: 20%

The monthly debt payments equal 20% of the income figure used. This does not mean total debt equals 20% of income.

Example 15

Build an Example Emergency-Fund Target

Essential monthly costs are £1,800 and a household chooses a target equal to three months of those costs.

Rule Emergency-Fund Target = Essential Monthly Costs × Chosen Number of Months
Substitute £1,800 × 3
Calculate £1,800 × 3 = £5,400
Example target: £5,400

Three months is the chosen example assumption, not a rule that is right for every household.

Example 16

Do Not Mix Debt Balance With Monthly Payment

A household may owe £8,000 in total but have required monthly debt payments of £500.

Total debt £8,000 = how much is still owed.
Monthly debt payments £500 = how much must be paid during the month.
For debt-to-income Use the monthly payment figure, not the £8,000 balance.
Result: these numbers answer different questions

The debt balance describes what is owed. The monthly payment describes the current monthly commitment.
